Baseball and Softball

The gold medal softball game at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics - commentary alongside Leah Secondo.

I worked as a lead baseball and softball commentator for Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, following a previous spell similarly covering the baseball and softball tournaments at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. (I had previously called a number of college baseball games on radio.)

At the top of the page is a YouTube video of the softball final between Japan and the USA; other full-game replays of my work in Tokyo can be found on the official Olympic website. Here is a selection of some of the games I called - "PxP" indicates the innings where I was the play-by-play commentator in games where I also provided color commentary:

Here are extended highlights from the Gold Medal game of the baseball tournament, which pitted Korea against Japan - my commentary partner was Tom Valcke, the Hong Kong manager (who I befriended during the tournament) and a baseball lifer who formerly worked as the Montreal Expos color commentator, just before the Expos moved to Washington DC:

I like to add humor to my commentary - I was constantly poking fun at the Indonesian fans' inability to catch foul balls into the stands at the softball venue, and that came to a head in the first clip below (on the left). And for the record, while helping keep stats for another commentator who filled in for me during a rare break, I was able to back up my words with some action (below right).
